Engine Sheds and Locomotive Depots of Britain
Selecting a single shed will bring up a page with any photographic records, additional references, web links and a Google location map. The map can also be reached by clicking the listed OS map reference in the multiple shed lists.
Note: Closure date in most cases refers to steam operation. The shed may still have continued in operation for diesel and electric traction, or as a signing on point for the crew.
Your help and input, as always, is most welcome in extending this database resource.

| Notes: | Located to the east of Barnstaple Junction station was a stone and timber built 1 track straight dead-ended shed. Facilities included a turntable and a coal stage. In 1863, a new shed was constructed alongside the original. This new shed was a timber built 2 track straight through shed with a gable style slate roof. The building was an odd shape as the northern side was slightly narrower and had a lower roof. The original shed was converted for use as a workshop and stores. At some date prior to 1947, the shed was re-roofed with corrugated iron. During the winter of 1961/2 the shed roof was destroyed in a gale. It was not re-roofed and by the early 1960s the shed had been allowed to become derelict. The closure dates are confused it was recorded as closed to steam in September 1964. However, steam continued to operate out of the shed until January 1965. The building was demolished shortly after closure, but the shed floor was still traceable and some track was still in-situ in the yard as late as 1988. | |
Can you Help?
We are looking for more information about the engine shed at BARNSTAPLE JUNCTION. In particular we are looking for photographs of the shed that we can publish on this site. Or can you contribute any other specific details of this or any other shed that would improve this resource for other visitors.
If you can help and own the copyright, please contact The Loco Shed Index Team in the usual way.
