If you live local to where a steam shed existed, and you probably had one or more not many miles away, you are in a position to research and help us build on the information presented on this web site.
Although we believe that we have a page here for every shed and servicing facility that was built for steam locomotives in England, Scotland and Wales some of the details are incomplete.
The following is a list of questions that we try to answer about every entry:
Dates
Where dates are given we would prefer an exact date.
- When was the facility opened or constructed ?
- When was the facility closed to steam, finally closed, demolished ?
Location
- Which county, town was the facility located in ?
- What was it's OS grid reference, or (lat, long) geographic location ?
- Where is the location relative to the railway, nearest station, rail route ?
Construction
- How many tracks, bays did it have and were they dead-ended or through roads ?
- What materials were used to build or alter the shed ?
- What was its design and architectural features ?
- What were the facilities and how did they evolve ? Turntable size, coaling method, water storage and supply?
Ownership
- Who built the facility ?
- Who operated the facility ?
- Who owns it now ?
Events
- Are there any specific events (fires, rebuilding, extending, re-roofing) concerning the facility ?
- The addition of other facilities: coaling plants, turntables and their size.
- What occupied the site or what use was made of it after closure ?
- Does it still exist ?
Photographic Record, Personal Memories, Web Links, References
There is plenty of room on this site for all of these and they are always welcome.
